British, Steve would have probably become a professional soccer player if, inspired by Sir Francis Chichester’s writings, he hadn’t embarked upon his first round-the-world race at a very young age in 1993. Hayles took part in all the editions of the VOR until 2007, five in total, specializing in the role of navigator. Steve then worked for two years at BMW Oracle and was the navigator on board the TP52 Matador in the Audi MedCup and on the Minimaxi Ran with which he won the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and the Fastnet Race.
