Mascalzone Latino, t-boned by the Kiwis, can’t finish the second race

In the second match of the day, after an equal start, Mascalzone Latino Audi Team and Emirates Team New Zealand, collide while approaching the weather mark.

The umpires flag two penalties on Mascalzone Latino Audi Team, one of them red, forcing the Italians to immediately offload it.

The spinnaker pole of the yacht helmed by Dean Barker spears through the size of NZL-84, helmed by Gavin Brady.

Both teams hoist their spinnakers and sail towards the leeward gate. On the Italian boat the crew keeps a constant eye on the damage, located not too far from the shroud attachments.

When the moment comes to drop the spinnaker in order to start the windward leg, Mascalzone Latino is forced to abandon the race: it would have been too risky to continue without thoroughly checking the extent of the damage.
